Configuring VLANs and VTP

Overview/Description
To configure, verify, and troubleshoot VLANs, VLAN trunks and VTP on a switched network

Target Audience
Network engineers responsible for configuring, implementing, troubleshooting, and managing a multilayer switched network in an enterprise or service provider environment; network architects responsible for designing multilayer switched networks to carry voice, video, and data traffic in an enterprise or service provider environment; CCNP, CCDP, and CCIP candidates. CCIE routing and switching candidates

Prerequisites
Knowledge of basic router configuration, basic switch configuration, basic virtual local area network (VLAN) configuration, basic Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) configuration, basic trunking configuration, and standard access list configuration

Expected Duration
200 Minutes

Objectives:

Configuring VLANs and VTP

  • Define the basic features and operation of VLANs on a switched network, compare end-to-end and local VLANs, and configure VLANs and VLAN membership in a network.
  • verify the VLAN configuration and troubleshoot common VLAN problems on a switched network.
  • define workgroups and create VLANs on a network.
  • identify the features of VLAN trunking and dynamic trunking protocol and outline the basic features and operation of ISL and 802.1Q trunking.
  • identify the roles of different VLAN types, detail how to use VLAN ranges and mappings to scale VLANs, and outline the operation of service-provider-managed VLAN services.
  • configure and verify ISL and 802.1Q trunks and troubleshoot VLAN trunking problems on a switched network.
  • define VLAN trunking protocols, outline characteristics of VLAN trunking, and demonstrate how they are implemented.
  • define VTP, outline where to use it on a switched network, and compare the operation of VTP versions 1 and 2.
  • configure VTP domains in server, client, and transparent modes and verify and troubleshoot the VTP configuration.
  • configure VTP and verifyVTP configuration.
