Implementing Multilayer Switching in the Network
Overview/Description
To select multilayer switching architectures, monitor and troubleshoot Multilayer Switching (MLS) and Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF), and configure interVLAN routing
Target Audience
Network engineers responsible for configuring, implementing, troubleshooting, and managing a multilayer switched network in an enterprise or service provider environment; network architects responsible for designing multilayer switched networks to carry voice, video, and data traffic in an enterprise or service provider environment; CCNP, CCDP, and CCIP candidates. CCIE routing and switching candidates
Prerequisites
Knowledge of basic router configuration, basic switch configuration, basic virtual local area network (VLAN) configuration, basic Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) configuration, basic trunking configuration, and standard access list configuration
Expected Duration
180 Minutes
Objectives:
Implementing Multilayer Switching in the Network
identify the operation of the key components required to implement Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching and multilayer forwarding, and outline the packet flow with each type of forwarding
identify attributes of multilayer switching table architectures and outline characteristics of centralized and distributed forwarding, demand-based switching, and topology-based switching
identify components of layer 2 and multilayer switching and recognize the operation of different switching types and their components.
identify the features and outline the operation of CEF-based MLS on Catalyst switches.
Configure and verify CEF and troubleshoot CEF configuration on Catalyst switches.
identify port types on multilayer switches, and outline how to configure them to support routing between VLANs.
outline the operation and configuration of interVLAN routing and verify interVLAN routing configuration.
configure a distribution multilayer switch for routing, configure VLAN interfaces for IP addresses with Layer 3 routing, enable interVLAN routing, and verify routing configurations.
verify that CEF is operating properly on Cisco multilayer switches.
