Using PPP and Controlling Network Access

Overview/Description
To outline the features available with PPP and the commands that are used to implement them

Target Audience
Network engineers responsible for configuring, implementing, troubleshooting, and managing WAN and remote access solutions; network architects responsible for designing WAN and remote access solutions; CCNP candidates; CCIE candidates

Prerequisites
A knowledge of general networking terms and concepts; experience in general Cisco router operation and configuration, including TCP/IP, routing protocols (RIP, IGRP), routed protocols (IP, IPX), standard and extended access lists, PPP operation and configuration over serial links, Frame Relay operation and configuration on interfaces and subinterfaces, and legacy DDR over ISDN-BRI operation and configuration; a basic knowledge of data networking equivalent to the information in the Cisco Certified Network Associate Basics (CCNAB) v2.0 course and the Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices (ICND) v2.0 course; experience working in a network environment is recommended

Expected Duration
180 Minutes

Objectives:

Using PPP and Controlling Network Access

  • recognize how remote nodes can connect using PPP, identify the properties of PPP, and compare and contrast HDLC and PPP.
  • configure serial interfaces using PPP encapsulation, enable autoselection of PPP encapsulation on an asynchronous interface, configure Layer 3 addressing on a serial interface, and identify the LCP options for PPP.
  • recognize the PPP authentication process and identify the steps and commands necessary to implement PAP and CHAP authentication with PPP.
  • configure Layer 3 addressing and PAP and CHAP on a serial interface.
  • recognize how to implement and configure PPP callback.
  • identify the steps and commands necessary to implement and configure PPP callback.
  • recall the operational details of multilink PPP and identify the commands used in its configuration.
  • identify the commands used to verify and debug PPP and dialer configurations.
  • configure PPP for a central site.
