Overview/Description
To introduce the Solaris 8 system and explain how to perform basic system administration operations

Target Audience
Trainee system administrators of Solaris and experienced system administrators of other operating systems moving to Solaris

Prerequisites
Familiarity with using or managing a computer system running under any variant of UNIX; experience interacting with a Solaris operating environment as an end-user, using the vi text editor, and working with a windowing system

  • describe the major features of Solaris 8 and understand Solaris system administration terminology.
  • use the various man commands and describe how to reformat and display the manual pages.
  • use the man command to display a list of manual pages matching a search criterion.
  • use basic command syntax in Solaris.
  • navigate through directory trees using the absolute and relative pathnames.
  • perform basic file management operations in Solaris.
  • list directory contents and display file properties.
  • use some basic vi commands.
