Objectives:

Installation and Basic Configuration of Linux

  • complete the preparations required to install the Linux operating system.
  • design an appropriate hard-disk layout and partitioning scheme.
  • install the Linux operating system.
  • install new software from source.
  • identify where most Linux configuration files are found, describe how these files can be changed, and explain the functions of some of them.
  • install a boot manager and arrange backup booting.
  • boot the system using LILO and issue commands during the boot process.
  • print a file.
  • query a print queue and cancel print jobs.
  • perform basic printer administration tasks.
  • administer printers.
  • install local and remote printers.
  • explain the purpose and architecture of the X Window System and identify its components.
  • describe typical X client/server systems, install and configure XFree86, and set up and customize XDM.
  • list the information required to configure XFree86, describe the layout of a typical XF86Config file, and explain how to use two configuration tools.
  • configure XFree86 using Xconfigurator, xf86config, and by editing the XF86Config file directly.
