Objectives:

  • To describe how HP-UX processes are executed, and in particular how several processes may run concurrently
  • To consider how the UNIX facility of redirection is used
  • To consider how the UNIX pipe facility is used in HP-UX
  • To consider how the UNIX tools called filters are used
  • To introduce the user to the possibility of combining redirection, pipes and filters in powerful composite commands
  • To explain how the manner in which processes are created generates a process hierarchy
