Overview/Description
This second course in the series "Leadership in Senior Management" covers the practical actions necessary for senior leaders to operate to the principles set out in the first course, Senior Leadership Principles.

Target Audience
Managers in senior positions with supervisory, managerial, professional or senior technical staff as subordinates, or those about to enter such a position.

Developing Staff

  • Motivating Staff

  • recognize the powerful benefits of identifying people's motivation in order to provide the vehicle for achieving improved performance.
  • identify the principles which govern the motivation of individuals at work.
  • identify opportunities for satisfaction of staff needs.
  • given practical, real life case study situations, determine which need(s) will have to be satisfied and how best to provide satisfaction.
  • Appraising Staff

  • recognize how using performance appraisals can positively impact employee effectiveness and performance.
  • identify appropriate standards of performance for work activities.
  • identify the nature of a performance problem and guide the manager to the best course of action to solve it.
  • identify the most effective methods of preparing for and conducting appraisal interviews.
  • Building and Leading Teams

  • recognize the basic nature of a team.
  • identify the nature of team members and how to optimize their likely contribution to teamwork.
  • recognize the human, organizational and managerial factors which make a team work effectively.
  • identify the different styles of decision making appropriate to teams and when each is most likely to be effective.
